I turned down a student once because they wanted a grade in three months. That's not how this works.

Ochre Vibrato opened in autumn 2017 in a second-floor studio above a bookshop on Caldwell Lane. The name came from a colour swatch Mara Lindqvist found pinned to the wall when she first viewed the space. The walls were painted a deep, warm ochre, and the acoustics were surprisingly good for a room that had previously been used as a photography archive. She kept the colour. The bookshop is still there below.

The school grew slowly and on purpose. For the first two years it was just Mara and a handful of students, mostly adults who had played as children and wanted to find their way back. Tomasz joined in 2019 to take on piano, and Priya came aboard in early 2021 after the first lockdown, when demand for voice lessons had quietly doubled. There are now three teachers and around sixty regular students, ranging from a six-year-old who is working through her first Suzuki pieces to a retired GP who started violin at sixty-three.
