Do I need my own instrument before starting?
No. We lend out a student violin or a portable keyboard for the first month at no extra cost. It gives you time to try the instrument properly before spending money on one. After that we can point you toward reputable second-hand options if you want to keep going.
What age do you teach from?
The youngest students we take are five years old, and only if they can sit still for twenty minutes, which is a real test. There is no upper age limit. Our oldest current student started at sixty-three. Adults who feel self-conscious about starting late are usually the most motivated students we have.
How long until I can play a real piece of music?
Honestly, it depends on the instrument and how often you practise at home. Most violin beginners can play a simple recognisable melody within six to eight weeks. Piano students often get there faster. Voice students sometimes sing a full song in their second lesson. We do not make promises, but we do not drag things out either.
Do you prepare students for ABRSM exams?
Yes, all three teachers are familiar with the ABRSM syllabus and can prepare students for grades 1 through 8. That said, we never push exams on students who are not interested. Plenty of our students play purely for enjoyment and have no interest in grading, which is completely fine.
What is the trial lesson like?
It is a 45-minute session with the teacher for your chosen instrument. We spend the first part getting to know what you want from lessons, and the second part actually playing. The cost is £25, which is reduced from the standard rate. There is no obligation to continue after that.
